August, 2008:

Munchkin Project Pink

Check out this cute pink duck! It’s the little mascot for Munchkin baby products’ new Project Pink Campaign, which is bringing awareness to early cancer prevention, reminding mothers everywhere not to “duck a breast exam.”

On the Project Pink site’s Email a Duck, Raise a Buck page, you can decorate a duck of your own, and then email it to all your friends. For every emailed duck, Munchkin is donating five cents to Susan G. Komen breast cancer foundation’s Komen for the Cure.

The campaign actually began on August 1st, but I’m just now getting around to posting about it. Breast Cancer Awareness Month actually begins in October, though, and there’s lots going on with Project Pink between now and then! You can buy a duck like the one pictured here for just $2.99, with 100% of the proceeds going to Komen for the Cure. From late September through the month of October, you can also pick up one of these from Babies R’ Us, Target, Kmart, Meiger, HEB, Fred Meyer, Burlington, Buy Buy Baby, Rite Aid, Longs, and Zellers.

And in October, celebrity decorated pink ducks will be available for auction on eBay with all proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. You can check out the celebrity photos on the site. Munchkin makes so many amazing products for babies and young children – I LOVE that they’re focusing on the mamas, and bringing awareness to breast cancer.

The Wonder Pets Save the Bengal Tiger!

Wonder Pets Save the Bengal Tiger! We recently previewed a new Wonder Pets episode scheduled to premier on Nickelodeon in primetime on Monday, September 8th.

Linny, Tuck and Ming-Ming will have preschoolers shimmying and singing along in an exciting Bollywood-themed half-hour The Wonder Pets! primetime special, “Save The Bengal Tiger!,” premiering Monday, Sept. 8, at 8:00 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon. Capturing the passionate spirit of Hindi cinema, “Save The Bengal Tiger!” features critically acclaimed Indian actress Nandita Das as the voice of the Bengal Tiger and sibling duo Salim and Sulaiman Merchant as composers of the musical score.

This is a really cute episode, and my kids were completely enthralled by the great music and costumes. You can get on Nick Jr.’s website right now and check out interactive games and activities to based on this episode. In The Bengal Tiger’s Bash game, the Wonder Pets are getting ready for a party hosted by the Bengal Tiger. Kids can dress Linny, Tuck and Ming-Ming, and then create a song and dance for them to perform for the Bengal Tiger. Besides the games, you can find Bollywood-themed printables, crafts, activities and more on the Nick Jr. site.

Mark your calendars for September 8th!

The Travel Adventures of Lilly P Badilly

The Travel Adventures of Lilly P. Badilly is a book written and illustrated by Debbie Glade. The CD is a narration of the story, read by the author, and full of music written by the author’s daughter and husband. The story follows a family of millipedes who live in the Miami International Airport and embark on a journey to Costa Rica, stowing away in a traveler’s briefcase. They get into all sorts of trouble and have to figure out how to save themselves from a scary spider and get back home. The CD includes authentic Costa Rican rainforest sound effects, lots of catchy music, and the goofiest cartoon voices you’ve ever heard.

A few weeks ago, my kids and I checked out this book and CD, and I’m going to include their commentary here in my review. Basically, we all thought this book was hysterical. The author’s cartoon voices are the best part. As soon as I heard Lilly “speak” I started giggling. I giggled even more when I heard the voice of Grandpa Willy Badilly. It’s actually become a big joke around our house – Kayley and I love to talk to and tease each other in the voices of Lilly and Grandpa. And my kids loved hearing Grandpa Willy, who has chronic gas, farting throughout the story. What can I say, we love potty humor in this house.

It’s a fun story with a great message – the themes it touches on include being happy with yourself and celebrating your uniqueness, facing your fears, helping others in need, and even being compassionate with those folks who are less kind than they ought to be. All great things for kids to hear about! And the CD is 35 minutes long – it’s great to pop in for a car trip across town.

Here are some of my kids’ thoughts on this book:

Grandpa Willy farts just like daddy farts! – Nikki, age 3.

Who is that man singing in the first song? Just some guy who decided to sing a song with Lilly? He isn’t in the story anywhere else! – Mallory, age 5.

They ate a brown banana! I don’t yike brown bananas! Only yellow bananas. – Lexi, age 3.

It’s a really fun book for the whole family. I don’t think this book is available in stores yet, but you can purchase it directly from the author’s website, at LillyBadilly.com. Do it!

Also, if you’re a Florida resident, you can have Lilly Badilly’s author, Debbie Glade, visit your school or library to speak about geography, culture, plants and animals, problem-solving, reading, writing, and all the other things she writes about in her book. I would be all over this, if I lived out there! I had a nice little conversation with the author, and found out that her husband is a twin, and that he and his twin sister were #6 and #7 for his folks. Can you imagine? I love that this book was a labor of love by the whole family.

One week.

One more week of summer break before the little ones get back on track and head back to school. (They go to year round school, on a 9 weeks on/3 weeks off schedule.) I am SO ready for them to go back! They’re bored to death at home, and it’s such a pain to go to the store with everyone when we need groceries and stuff. I can’t wait to get back into our daily routine! I always have good intentions when we’re on break – we’re going to keep with the routine, etc. It never happens! The kids have been going to bed at like 9:45. Ugh! We need to jump right back in, or the first week will be hell for everyone!

I think we’re going to head out in the next day or two and get haircuts for everyone. Pablo is looking WAY shaggy!
